This novel resonates with and is inspired by the current MMIW nationwide movement to bring attention to the missing among the Indigenous peoples of the United States and Canada.

In a remote Alaskan school district, a consultant reviewing school records discovers a suspicious pattern of girls missing over several years. Annie Brewster and her partner Arturo Feliz pursue the consultant’s concern, long after it was investigated and dismissed. Is anyone really missing, or is there some reasonable explanation? In short order, a deceased Fairbanks prostitute is determined to actually be one of the village girls, reported drowned near her village many years earlier. Then a Nebraska police department calls to say that a village girl came there reporting that she had been abducted. And just that quickly, disappeared again. Village people and school and church authorities shrug and say, "you don't understand the culture." But Annie has a hunch that there is something more going on, and soon enough, she knows exactly what it was.

It is up to the Alaska Cold Case Unit to determine who is missing, what crimes were committed and how they are related, and who might be responsible. In a conflagration that eventually implicates church personnel, village ne’er do wells, and strange foreign men, the cases converge. Annie must fight her own memories of date rape and helplessness to bring justice to the young girls, women and boys who were abused, trafficked or killed. As usual, Annie’s husband Fred and springer spaniel Bones are her biggest support system at home, and she and Arturo travel to yet another part of rural Alaska, out onto the Yukon and Kuskokwim Deltas, to find key evidence, identify perpetrators and “bring home” at least some of the missing.

Nancy Buell - Central Oregon Author and Poet
ABOUT NANCY BUELL

Nancy Atherton Buell was born in Oregon, but spent over half of her life in Alaska with her husband of 50 years and a succession of springer spaniels. She lived in Barrow, Anchorage, Juneau and Kenai, and is now retired to Oregon. Having found her creative voice and the time to use it, she writes every day in her studio.

Nancy has been an educator at every level, from public school to university.
After she retired, she made and sold jewelry, and processed large quantities of fish. Occasionally wrote an educational product. And then, one day, found the bankers box containing all of her youthful poetry and prose. Since then, in her new writing and jewelry studio, she writes, edits, and waits for the next poem to visit.

Key to all of Nancy’s work, and no less in the poetry, is a profound sense of “place,” and how that influences human life. All of her prose vividly describes not only Alaska, but the other places in the nation and in Mexico and Canada to which the characters travel.
